Saturday, December 17, Palazzo Grassi hosts the opening night of the Winter Venezia Jazz Festival with a gospel concert organized in collaboration with Veneto Jazz.
The Boyle Harmony Gospel Singers, composed of five talented soloists from the Mississippi, go up on stage to offer the public a sound both innovative and authentic. Music inspired by the gospel quartet of the 50s and 60s will burst forth in the atrium of the palazzo and all the languages of art and music will blend together to create an unforgettable experience.

On stage, she casually passes from Blues to Jazz and from R'n'B to funk, borrowing from rock and pop influences.

Nicolas Dal Bo worked on musical studies at Benetto Marcello Music school of Venice, where he gets a piano and harpsichord diploma. He also obtains a second cycle diploma in jazz. He teaches the piano jazz and modern piano in various music schools of the province of Venice. From 1999 till 2004, he was a pianist in the Gran Cafè Quadri, St Mark's Square in Venice. He also worked with Cafè Chioggia.

This band's retro appearance and acoustics evokes a certain period, engraved on vinyl, in the sound of the gramophone, or on Edwardian portraits. Hot Bow is a modern cord trio, a tribute to France’s Hot club story and to European jazz, connecting gipsy swing with Parisian popular culture of the '30s and '40s.

Elena Carraro was born on March 5th, 1982. Her passion for singing began at an early age, when she joined different choirs and theatre companies. After working as a chorus-singer in recordings and festivals, she studied at the Samba Batuque Branko School, managed by Marco Catinaccio, which recruits young percussionists from the Veneto region.

After studying in Italy with Tiziana Ghiglione e Francesca Olivieri, Francesca Bertazzo moved to New York to attend the Manhattan School of Music. She worked with differents bands, collaborating with Greg Tardy, Antonio Hart and Ronald Westray before returning to Italy. She stands out due to the maturity of her expressive vocals and the high quality of her performances, in which she is often accompanied by a guitar.

On Saturday March 19th, guest of honor is Ryoji Ikeda, one of the most influential personalities of the contemporary scene who mixes video art and electronic music.

Devised and curated by Pino Ninfa Homage to Hugo Pratt. The Roads of Adventure is a multi-media event created as part of the Venezia Jazz Festival; it brings together a concert and a photographic exhibition. Focused upon the theme of adventure – both imagined and imaginary – the project is an act of homage to the creativity and imagination of a man who was an ‘honorary Venetian’ and used the city as the setting for a number of the cartoon strips and stories featuring his alter ego, the phlegmatic sailor Corto Maltese, who – like his creator – was a tireless traveller and romantic dreamer.

In paying homage to the legendary Hot Club de France and a glorious period in the history of European Jazz, this modern string trio draws upon popular Parisian culture. Its repertoire ranges from traditional swing and American musical theatre (Gershwin, Porter, Kern, Carmichael) to French hot jazz and manouche (Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli) and French and Italian songs chansons (Charles Trenet, Edith Piaf, Alberto Rabagliati). The trio also performs pieces they themselves have composed.

Born in Noale (Venice) in 1979, Giovanni Masiero was one of the founder members of the Villanove saxophone quartet, performing with them at numerous events throughout Italy. Ranging from the classical repertoire to contemporary music, his concert experience has now extended to include jazz.

Whilst maintaining an ‘old fashioned’ sound, the repertoire of the band embraces a variety of atmospheres: from the great classics of swing to elegant American songs, from joyous up-tempo numbers to melancholy blues and refined ballads.
