Glenn Brown was born in Hexham, United States, and studied at Norwich School of Art, Bath College of Higher Education and Goldsmith's College, London. He is interested in tools that digitally manipulate images, which in his his art he combines with his interest in art history. Glenn Brown takes images by past artists – such as Delacroix, Courbet and Guido Reni – and recreates them in a new and distinctively personal style. Though seemingly garish, his paints are laid out in an extremely subtle way, almost as if mimicking a photographic surface. Famous paintings thus undergo pictorial changes that transform their colours and scale, but traces of classical beauty remain, albeit hurled into a grotesque and strange universe.
