Kai Althoff was born in Cologne, Germany. Althoff’s work encompasses drawings, paintings, photographs, video, written texts, performance and installations. His paintings often move beyond the classic rectangle of the traditional canvas towards trapezoid or irregular forms. They have their roots in German neo objectivity, but their simplification often moves close to abstraction. Expanding into the third dimension, Althoff’s practice takes him close to the idea of total art. He works closely on the smallest details of his large installations and mise-en-scènes, which invite the viewer into an immersive experience. Althoff’s environments are like stories made of fragmentary and undecipherable elements, and through their irresistible combination of aesthetic magnetism and enigmatic content, they draw the viewer into an unknown territory.
