Mark Bradford was born in 1961 in Los Angeles, and studied at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia. Bradford’s work consists mainly of collage and painting, which he often combines in works that explore the political and social dynamics of large American cities, in particular Los Angeles. He takes his starting point from public spaces, which he understands as places of social interaction between different classes, types, sexes and races. Bradford approaches his paintings as puzzles, starting with real historical moments or episodes, which he reduces to shreds by abandoning the figurative style and reconstructing them in a new form. Known principally for his pictorial work, Bradford has also carried out community art projects; not satisfied with just representing the city, he also explores its social dynamics.
