Richard Hughes was born in 1974 in Birmingam, United Kingdom. He studied Industrial Design at Imperial College and the Royal College of Art, then philosphy at Surrey University. Hughes finds his materials in the urban environment arond him: he collects anything that evokes a sense of abandonment, such as discarded objects and detritus, and rethinks these materials in the exhibition space. Through elements drawn from the suburbs of English cities, Hughes addresses the themes of collective memory, social history and urban decay, employing a subtle irony and light sense of the absurd. Hughes encourages the viewer not to stop at the first visual impact, but to go beyond the literal meaning of objects, thus opening up new modes of seeing.
