Postcard from Nice

The landscapes of the Côte d’Azur often recur in Martial Raysse’s work. Many of his works are pervaded by the irresistible appeal of the Mediterranean, an universe of leisure, a sweet carefree lifestyle, and pleasure. The landscape of Nice is the idyllic setting of Conversation printanière (1964) and the bathing ‘jungle’ is also present in many of the artist’s assemblages, like the electrifying Raysse Beach (1962), which lies beneath a neon sun and has Beach Boys blaring from a juke-box… Ici Place, comme ici-bas (2012) recreates the dream of the Côte d’Azure in a true utopian landscape that extends from the Mont Saint-Victoire to a shore that recalls Botticelli’s Primavera (1478-1482).
