Loco Bello

The series of tempera paintings that Martial Raysse developed from 1973 are important in many ways. First of all, he redicovered the intricate tempera medium, which he worked in various ways, mixing it into a paste to spread sumptuous colours, or diluting it to become evanescent and watery. He also discovered a new approach to composition: he created a gallery of figures, like a fabulous bestiary, which undergo continuous and traceable change, like other aspects of the artist’s output (Loco Bello – Image X, 1975-76; Bleu rivage, 1975). Finally, he developed poetic and enigmatic stories that found inspiration in the rural and bucolic landscape which he discovered in the area of Ussy-sur-Marne.
