Tadao Ando was chosen by French business tycoon François Pinault to create the Contemporary Art Centre of Punta della Dogana.
With the restoration of the fifteenth-century Dogana da Mar, Tadao Ando continued the work he had begun in Venice with the renovation of Palazzo Grassi.
Francesco Dal Co’s book Tadao Ando for François Pinault is the story of a  conservation/restoration project.

The scheme started from the idea of transforming the Punta della Dogana warehouses into a new exhibition venue that would combine memory and innovation, restoring functionality to an old building and changing it to meet contemporary aesthetic values.
Ando’s work on Punta della Dogana was measured, preserving the site’s strong personality and fully maintaining its original architecture. In accordance with the past and in line with the present, Ando designed alternating reinforced concrete partitions that organise the exhibition spaces and create a contrast that highlights the materials and features of the existing structure.
The book’s wealth of photographs charts the work’s evolution, from the initial construction site up to the finished building, and is completed by personal interviews with the patron and architect.

Here, the work of Tadao Ando and the exhibitions sponsored by Pinault give full and coherent expression to a vision of art and architecture in today’s world.
