Bertille Bak was born in 1983 in Arras, France. She studed at Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains in Tourcoing and the School of Fine Arts in Paris. Through films that combine reality and fiction, Bak positions herself as an observer of communities, of their rituals and objects. However, her position is not neutral. Her projects entail her living for a certain number of months, integrated within the community that she is presenting, during which she establishes contact and instills her own routine. The resulting works fluctuate between documentaries, investigation and ethnographic research. The participants in her videos are members of the communities, and the backdrops are glimpses of the city. As in a game, these people ‘play’ themseves in their daily lives, but through the exaggerated dimension of the artists’s personal vision.
Recent exhibitions dedicated to her work include those at The Gallery Apart, Rome (2016), Maison du peuple at Vénissieux, France (2015) and Galerie Xippas, Paris (2014). Bertille Bak was included in the exhibition ‘Voice of Images (2012-13) at Palazzo Grassi.
