Cao Fei was born in 1978 in Guangzhou, China. He currently lives and works in Beijing. In his installations and videos, Cao Fei examines the expectations and dreams of China’s young generations. In his works, Cao Fei combines popular aesthetics with a documentary vision, presenting strong social criticism that reflects on the inconsistencies and hopes of his country. Fascinated by the potential of the virtual world, not only as a means of escaping reality but also as an instrument of online urbanization, Cao Fei has founded RMB City. Using the well-known digital platform Second Life, Cao Fei – through his avatar China Tracy – has given form to a virtual artistic community that lives and operates in an environment that reflects the typical characteristics of Chinese cities.
In 2015, Cao Fei’s work La Town (2014) was presented at the 56th Venice Biennale. Exhibitions dedicated to his work include those at Lombard Freid Gallery, New York (2014), Art Centre of South Australia (2014), The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City (2011). His work was included in the exhibition ‘Voice of Images’ (2012-13) at Palazzo Grassi.
