David Claerbout was born in 1969 in Kortrijk in Belgium, and currently lives and works in Antwerp. He trained as an artist at the Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, then began experimenting with different media such as photography, digital art and video installations. At the heart of his work is the relationship between image and time, which he uses as a medium. With the digital techniques of image manipulation, Claerbout creates hybrid forms halfway between cinema and photography, which challenge the viewer’s perception and obliterate the line between reality and ficton, between the spontaneous and constructed.
David Claerbout has exhibited at the Project Arts Centre, Dublin (2015), MAMCO, Geneva (2015) and San Francisco Museum of Art (2011). His works were presented at Palazzo Grassi in the exhibitions “The Illusion of Light” (2014-15) and “The World Belongs to you” (2011-12).
