Gelitin is the name of an artistic collective formed by four Austrian artists: Florian Reither, Tobias Urban, Wolfgang Gantner and Ali Janka. The four artists have worked together since 1973, but they only called themselves a collective in 1993. Gelitin create installations and happenings, which involve but at the same time intimidate the viewer, with scenarios that are surreal, provocative and disturbing. The collective transforms exhibition spaces into new worlds where chaos, absurdity, pleasure, madness, sexuality and eroticism reign. With a strong sense of humour, the Gelitin artists override the literal sense of things to revise their meanings. They aim for a freedom of expression and communication, relying on a philosophy of pleasure, enjoyment and extreme lascivousness.
