Harald Thys & Jos de Gruyter
The two Belgian artists Harald Thys e Jos de Gruyter have worked together in Brussels since the 1980s. Their videos, photographs, sculptures and drawings are always characterised by a strong tragi-comic sensibility. Their works often feature fantasy figures, which are embodied by dolls, mannequins or cuddly toys, and sometimes, amateur actors. The world of Thys and De Gruyter is populated by people on the margins: invalids, the mentally ill and the alienated who are typically presented in scenerios such as the home, the battlefield or the outskirst of cities.
Among the most important exhibitions of Thys & de Gruyter’s works are those held at Moma PS1 (2015), the Kunsthalle of Vienna (2014) , at MHKA in Antwerp (2013) and at Culturgest in Lisbon (2012). In 2013, they exhibited at the Venice Biennale.
