Javier Téllez was born in 1969 in Valencia in Venezuela. He currently lives and works in New York. His artistic output takes inspiration from his interest in psychology and psichiatry. Téllez, through various media, looks at the way mental pathologies and psychiatric patients are perceived in the common imagination. He often works in collaboration with psychiatric hospitals, and focuses his attention on madness as a condition of social exclusion and an obstable to integration. Téllez uses the irrational as an instrument of research, to question what we believe to be normal and abnormal.
Recent exhibitions dedicated to his work include those at the Museo de Arte, Universidad Nacional de Bogotá, Colombia (2016), Kunsthaus, Zurich (2014) and Art Institute, San Francisco (2014). His work was included in the exhibition ‘Voice of Images’ (2012-13) at Palazzo Grassi.
