Liu Dahong was born in 1962 in Qingdao, China. During the 1980s, he attended the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Art where he finished his studies in 1985. He then began teaching at Normal University in Shanghai, where he currently lives and works. Liu Dahong is principally a painter. In his early years, he looked at folklore and the local life of his city of origin using a painting technique inspired by the great Dutch masters. Later, Shanghai gave Liu Dahong inspiration for his work. However, it is with video that he reflect on aspects and contradictions of the Cultural Revolution in China.
Recent exhibitions dedicated to his work include those at Iberia Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing in 2010 and his participation in the third Guangzhou Triennial in 2008. Setting-up Exercices to Radio Music (2007) was included in the exhibition ‘Voice of Images’ (2012-13) in Palazzo Grassi.
