Rob Pruitt was born in Washington D.C. in 1964. Until the 1990s he was half of the duo Pruitt Early, along with his colleague Jack Early. In 1992 they parted ways and Rob Pruitt embarked on a solo career. His work consists of paintings, sculptures and installations, and is driven by his interest in popular and mass culture. A large part of his work is made of canvases which feature one or several pandas, in black and white or in other colours. However, eager to move beyond the two-dimensionality of painting, Rob Pruitt is always coming up with new strategies to encourage viewers to interact with his works in an active and participatory way. Since 1999, he has developed his 101 Art Ideas You Can Do Yourself, a DIY-like art kit, in which the artist provides instructions of to make a work of art, for example, ‘Sell a collector the key to your house’ or ‘Stick stickers on beer cans’.
