Talk with Elisabeth Lebovici

The critic and art historian, Elisabeth Lebovici is at the Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi for two appointments: a talk open to the public and a masterclass reserved for the students of the Accademia delle Belle Arti, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and University Iuav di Venezia.

Tuesday 4 december, at 6.30 pm, Elisabeth Lebovici presents her book Ce que le sida m'a fait: Art et activisme à la fin du XXè siècle (Paris-Zurich, JPR | Ringier in collaboration with La Maison rouge - Fondation Antoine de Galbert, 2017), thanks to she was honoured with Pierre Daix Prize from Pinault Collection.
Engaged alongside French and American AIDS activists, Elisabeth Lebovici was a privileged observer, as an art historian and journalist, of the debates and issues of the 1980s and 1990s. In this book, Lebovici analyzes the relationships between art and activism at this pivotal moment, which she revisits from her memory as witness and survivor. Restoring the voices of the friends of the fight against AIDS; articulating the "I" and the "we" of then and today; examining facts and affects little known to the French and European public; analyzing the epidemic of consequential representation which followed the emergence of AIDS: such is the agenda of this book.

Elisabeth Lebovici studies feminism, questions of gender, queer politics, LGBT activism, and contemporary art, in her research, writing, and teaching. She is the author, with Catherine Gonnard, of Femmes/artistes, artistes/femmes, Paris de 1880 à nos jours (Hazan, Paris, 2007) and is the author of the blog lebeau-vice.blogspot.com. She belongs to the research collective Travelling Féministe at the Centre Audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir and is the co-director, with Patricia Falguières and Natasha Petreshin-Bachelez, of the seminar Something You Should Know : artistes et producteurs, at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS). She is a founding member of the LIG/Lesbiennes d’Intérêt Général fellowship fund.

Wednesday 5 december from 10 am to 1 pm Elisabeth Lebovici will hold a masterclass for the students of the Accademia delle Belle Arti, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and University Iuav di Venezia.
