Intorno a Nauman #3. Marche

The Teatrino presents a cycle of screenings entitled “Intorno a Nauman”, curated by cinema critic and independent curator Dominique Païni and inspired by the exhibition ‘Bruce Nauman: Contrapposto Studies’ open at Punta della Dogana until 27 November 2022.

The selection includes films that somehow echo the act of walking and the classical pose Contrapposto, two elements at the heart of Bruce Nauman’s works on view. As well as establishing a dialogue with the performances of Bruce Nauman, the cycle retraces the story of Contrapposto, of moving bodies, at the centre of cinematography since its beginning.

'Marche', the third appointment of the cycle, presents the film Gerry by Gus Van Sant, in which two men exhaust themselves in an endless and spectacular walk in the desert. It is accompanied by the screening of conceptual films by David Haxton, a reference for Bruce Nauman, and a work by Bruce Nauman, an example of a performance of body geometry performed by the artist:

  • Walking in an Exaggerated Manner around the Perimeter of a square (1967-68, 10'46) by Bruce Nauman
  • Black on White Tape (1974-75, 7'32) by David Haxton
  • Painting in Object (1976, 5'33) by David Haxton
  • Gerry (2002, 103') by Gus Van Sant
  • Vertical and Receding Lines (1974, 5'08) by David Haxton
  • Cutting Light and Dark Holes (1975, 4'07) by David Haxton
